Unfortunately, my big and I had to reschedule our plans for big little weekend to next week. However, I am really looking forward to the opportunity to spend some quality time with my big. For a big little weekend, our plan is to go to the movies and watch everything everywhere all at once which is supposed to be an extremely well-put-together film that people are easily claiming as their new favorite film. I am really looking forward to watching everything everywhere all at once, simply because Akunnia has been raving about the film so now I have to see what all of the hype is about. After the movie, we are just going to hang out, which I am excited about because I have really been enjoying learning more about my big thus far. I think she is a really kind and genuine person.
Despite not yet having a big little date, I feel as though I can speak on the value of mentorship simply from the support and guidance I have already received from my big and other activities so far in my journey. My time in Kappa Alpha Pi thus far has definitely had its highs and lows and through it all I have most definitely learned a lot. I have had many times where I was unsure about how to execute my tasks or even just been stressed over not having the time to do everything that I was supposed to do and though it has not been easy, having a big reach out and asking for help has been beneficial in more ways than I can describe. Since my big has already gone through the exact process I am going through now it is so reassuring and comforting to hear about her difficulties and the ways she was able to successfully make it through this experience. I think just knowing you have people on your side who are here to guide you and offer you support during the pledge process or even throughout life in general helps to alleviate some of the dress we are caring for and makes us feel less alone.
Another major take away I had was the importance of a work life balance. The past few weeks I have spent pledging have required me to give a lot of energy and time to my work. While I know the activities and tasks I have been working on are going to be of great benefit to me in the future but right now along with my course work it can easily become stressful. I have found that taking the time to completely step away from your work and allow yourself to do the thing that you enjoy is more beneficial than I would have thought. This weekend I allowed myself to take a day off where I did not touch anything school related and it was so nice to just give my mind a break. Allowing myself to take a mental break definitely helped to alleviate some of my stress and prevented me from reaching a place of burn out. Overall, I think it is so important that we are able to find balance in our lives simply because life has so much to offer us and we will never be able to explore those options if we are so hyperfocused on subsections of our lives.
