Vidya: I met Vidya outside of BCafe for my very first interview. I realized that we had a lot of similarities. We both grew up as minorities in our school and yearn to go into policy & law to solve inequalities within our own communities. It was nice seeing that we shared so many common interests, like how we both have chosen a career based on our lack of representation and resources during our upbringing. She was definitely a great first interview.

Hanna: I met Hanna at the Kerckoff Patio as a double with Abby. I enjoyed getting to learn more about how her background and experiences have shaped her career interests. I loved being able to discuss our shared passion for learning Spanish and our shared experiences of being minorities in those classes. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience interviewing her.

Isabela: I enjoyed talking to Izzy. She spoke a lot about her experiences with Kappa Alpha Pi - which really boosted my moral in my work here. She also spoke quite a bit about her upbringing on the East Coast. I really enjoyed a conversation and look forward to getting to know her more in the future.

Alli: Alli has been one of my favorite interviews thus far. It definitely felt like more of a conversation than it did an interview. We talked a lot about psychology, emotional attachments, and our upbringing. She gave me a lot of advice for the rush process. I really look forward to getting to know her more in the future.

Quota 6: I interviewed Kylie at the Kerckhoff Patio around noon. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to discuss her extracurricular activities, including her internship as a Political Science Researcher and her social media management role with Her Media. We also got to bond over the highs and lows of the pledging process. It was great knowing that the issues we as pledges face are universal problems that everyone experiences during pledging.

Quota 7 (Aya): I interviewed Aya at the Sproul Cove lounge on her floor. I loved being able to discuss our shared passion for entering a career in policy and being able to further conversate about the importance of destigmatization. Like the other actives I interviewed, we also talked about the most challenging and most enjoyable parts of the pledging process. The advice she gave me was very helpful and I look forward to getting to know her more in the future.

Quota 8 (Aku): I interviewed Aku at the Study early Monday morning. We began our conversation by discussing the mundane struggles that many students at UCLA face and how although we enjoyed our time here, we are very much ready to depart and move on to the next stage of our life. I really enjoyed being able to discuss my love for Afrobeats with another African since Africans make up such a small part of UCLA's population. I really enjoyed our conversation and look forward to getting to know Akunnia more in the future.

Quota 9 (Narek): Narek and I walked around Westwood for our interview Monday afternoon. We began our conversation by discussing our favorite and most challenging parts of the pledging process. We then moved on to discuss our shared love for R&B, which dominated the rest of our conversation for the remainder of the interview. We both enjoy the music of our queen, Summer Walker, while also being able to recognize her toxic and problematic behaviors. He also acknowledged Lauryn Hill as one of the if not THE BEST R&B artists to have ever lived. We bonded the discography of the many artists we both enjoyed and later discuss our favorite TV Shows. I really enjoyed my conversation with him and look forward to getting to know him better throughout the rest of the pledging process.

Quota 10 (Chanel): I met with Chanel near the water fountain in between Royce and Powell Library. I loved being able to discuss the identity crises we have both endured since we are both the children of immigrant parents who taught us little about our cultural background. We also had a great conversation about how the American school system often fails to adequately teach their students a different language - especially in comparison to other countries. I learned a lot about her experiences as Co-Director of Philanthropy and love the insightful advice she had given me for my future philanthropy events since I am Co-Chair of Philanthropy. I really enjoyed our overall conversation and look forward to getting to know her more in the future.

Quota 11 (Micah): I met with Micah on the lawn near the Tongva Steps on campus. I really enjoyed talking about her experiences being involved in UCLA's Hip Hop Congress - I could tell by the way she spoke about it that it was an extracurricular that she holds near and dear to her heart. I also really enjoyed being able to discuss our shared experiences of being East African at a predominantly white institution since the African population here is very small. I found the advice she had given me on balancing Kappa Alpha Pi and my courses very insightful and will definitely retain her words throughout the rest of my pledge process.

Quota 12 (Iris): I met Iris at Kerckhoff this afternoon. I really enjoyed getting to talk to another active about the culture shocks and identity crisis that comes along with being a first/second-generation immigrant. I also particularly enjoyed hearing about how it was attending UCLA throughout quarantine and the COVID-19 pandemic. It was beneficial listening to her talk about pursuing a minor in African American Studies since that's what I want to pursue. I really appreciated her advice on putting ourselves first even if the pledging process gets time-consuming. I truly enjoyed our conversation and look forward to getting to know her better in the future.

Quota 13 (Ira): The first person I interviewed this week for quota was Ira Phatak. I loved being able to discuss with her how she is managing a double major since that is something I would love to pursue in the future. Additionally, it was great being able to talk to another woman of color who is in a position that I would one day hope to be in. I overall really enjoyed our conversation.

Quota 14 (Cia): I interviewed Cia on Monday. I loved getting to confide in her about the struggles I have faced throughout the pledging process. It was especially nice being able to confide in another first-year about these issues since we both experienced the pledging process during our freshman year. I overall really enjoyed my conversation with her and look forward to getting to know her better throughout the rest of my pledge process.
